TikTok is marking its tenth anniversary on Sunday, September 20. Originally developed in China, the app has grown into a major player in global entertainment, with users spending an average of one hour and twenty-eight minutes per day on the platform in 2024, according to data from Mediametrie. This time increases to one hour and nine minutes when including adult users. A report submitted to the National Assembly in September 2025 raised concerns about "behavioral addiction" related to TikTok, warning of potential negative psychological effects on young users. TikTok's design is influenced by a field known as captology, which combines computer science and psychology. The term comes from the acronym "Computer As Persuasive TechnOLOGY" (Captology) and was introduced in the 1990s by psychologist Brian Fogg. Captologists aim to engage users by tapping into psychological tendencies, especially by triggering dopamine surges, which are linked to the brain’s response to rewards. In his book Hooked: How to Create a Product or Service That Builds Habits (Eyrolles, 2014), Nir Eyal, a student of Brian Fogg, explains that unpredictable rewards are more effective in capturing attention than predictable ones. He uses the example of a refrigerator, where a consistent light does not encourage frequent opening, but the surprise of a different gift each time does. The debate over whether social networks are addictive has become more divided in recent years, with growing criticism about their impact on user behavior. Frances Haugen, a former employee of Twitter or Facebook, has been vocal in this discussion. At the same time, platforms like TikTok continue to evolve and gain influence, extending their reach beyond entertainment. They may be shaping new ways people allocate their attention and develop daily habits. Experts remain divided on the psychological effects of such platforms, offering a range of perspectives. While some warn of potential harm, others emphasize the benefits and the complex ways in which users interact with digital content. The conversation continues to evolve as technology advances and new research emerges.
