Double Fine, a video game studio founded by developer Tim Schafer, has announced the upcoming release of its new game Thank You Bus Driver, set for October 14 on PC through platforms like Steam, GOG, and Itch.io. The game blends gameplay elements from Crazy Taxi, a 2002 arcade-style driving game known for its chaotic fun, and Papers, Please, a 2013 puzzle game set in a fictional dystopian state. In Thank You Bus Driver, players take on the role of a bus driver with three strict rules to follow: reaching the next stop no matter what, keeping passengers happy by maintaining the schedule, and enforcing rules strictly. If a passenger causes trouble, the player can let go of the wheel to give them a slap in the face, adding a humorous and interactive twist to the gameplay. The game is part of Double Fine's new initiative called Double Fine Action Labs, a label designed to release short, inexpensive games that are meant to be played in brief sessions. According to Tim Schafer, these projects are not meant to be large, polished productions but rather "complete games, but small, raw, and cheap." This approach reflects a shift in the studio’s strategy, aiming to experiment with different formats and ideas without the pressure of high production costs or long development cycles. Double Fine had previously faced challenges after Microsoft acquired the studio in 2014 and later reduced its workforce in 2021. However, the studio has since regained its independence and is now using the Double Fine Action Labs label to launch new projects. This new approach allows the studio to maintain creative control and explore more experimental ideas while keeping production costs low. The release of Thank You Bus Driver marks a new phase for Double Fine, emphasizing accessibility, affordability, and creative freedom. The game's unique concept and humorous mechanics aim to appeal to players looking for quick, engaging experiences. With its focus on short sessions and lower price points, the game is positioned as a test of the studio’s ability to innovate and adapt in the evolving video game industry.
