New Apple Watch Ultra 4 released

Apple has launched the Apple Watch Ultra 4, the latest model in its high-end connected watch series. This update comes just one year after the release of the Watch Ultra 3, a faster update cycle than the usual annual releases for the standard Watch Series.

Design and durability features

The Watch Ultra 4 retains the XL format and the same dimensions as the Watch Ultra 3, measuring 4.9 x 4.4 cm with a thickness of 1.2 cm and weighing 63 g. It uses a titanium frame, a ceramic back, and an OLED screen protected by sapphire glass, meeting the MIL-STD-810H military standard for durability. It is also water-resistant up to 40 meters.

Display and connectivity options

The watch includes an LTPO 3 OLED screen with a resolution of 422 x 514 pixels on a 1.98-inch diagonal, offering high brightness and excellent readability. It supports an Always-on mode, which can be turned off to conserve battery. The device includes a microphone, speaker, eSIM slot, and 64 GB of internal storage, allowing it to function independently. It supports Wi-Fi n, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC for Apple Pay, and satellite communications.

Hardware and interface

The Watch Ultra 4 is powered by the S11 chip, which promises improved performance and energy efficiency. It retains the same navigation system, with a rotatable crown and an Action button for quick access to features. Unlike some competitors, it uses the screen as a flashlight instead of a dedicated LED light. The interface remains largely unchanged, with a rich app ecosystem and notification management. However, Siri is not available on the watch, and certain features are not active in France.

Health and activity sensors

The watch includes a new electrode system for ECG measurements and more diodes for accurate heart rate tracking. It measures heart rate every 5 seconds and provides real-time statistics on a dedicated widget. Additional sensors track temperature, blood oxygenation (SpO2), and heart rate variability. It supports over 80 activities, including trail running, and uses a dual-frequency GNSS for precise location tracking.

Battery life and pricing

Apple claims up to 50 hours of battery life in normal use and 84 hours in power-saving mode. Testing showed the watch lasting approximately four days, with a full charge taking about 1 hour 54 minutes using the included induction charger. The Watch Ultra 4 is priced at 899 €, the same as its predecessor. While it offers improved features, some users note that the heart rate sensor can be sensitive to micromovements and requires proper positioning for accuracy.

Competing options

For Android users, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is a competitive alternative with a brighter OLED screen and similar measurement precision. With an iPhone, models like Garmin's Forerunner 970 offer precise data and longer battery life. The Watch Ultra 3 remains a relevant and cheaper option for those seeking a less durable but more affordable choice.
