Grandparents' Role in Child Development

Four child psychologists were questioned on what a grandparent can offer their family most importantly. Their answer, focused on parents rather than grandchildren, challenges many assumptions.

Psychologists Highlight Support for Parents

The psychologists emphasized that grandparents can play a determining role in the development of children, particularly when they are direct caregivers for their grandchildren, supporting parents with childcare. This support is crucial as it reduces the stress of adult children, positively impacting how they interact with their own children.

Unconditional Love and Family History

Dr Amy Kincaid Todey, a child psychologist, stated that grandparents offer something no one else can: unconditional love without the daily pressure of education. She emphasized that grandparents are the living history of their family, carrying stories, values, and a sense of identity that anchor grandchildren.

Respect and Consistency in Parenting

Dr Joseph Galasso noted that grandparents should prioritize supporting and respecting the parents, which forms the foundation of a solid family system. Dr Brittney Pearson added that grandparents should ensure consistency in rules and discipline, as children thrive in predictable environments.

Managing Disagreements with Parents

To manage disagreements, Dr Joseph Galasso suggested taking 24 hours to reflect before addressing situations where there is disagreement. Dr Maya Bousaini recommended a braking ritual, such as taking a deep breath and asking if the advice is necessary, true, and kind.

Validating and Respecting Parents' Efforts

Dr Amy Kincaid Todey emphasized validating the parents' efforts, starting with statements like, "I see how much you love them." The psychologists also recommended respecting the individuality of each child, putting presence before performance, and showing that grandparents continue to evolve.

Connecting Through Family Stories

Telling the family story, both fun and difficult, was highlighted as a way to connect with grandchildren. For these experts, a grandparent who supports the parents while offering a consistent, authentic, and story-filled presence creates an environment in which the child can feel safe.
