Direct upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 26H2

Microsoft has proposed a direct upgrade path from Windows 10 to Windows 11 26H2 for compatible PCs, allowing users to move to the newer operating system without reinstalling their software or settings. This update, which has been available since late September of last year, is described as a lighter update that primarily activates dormant features added incrementally to Microsoft's operating system.

Performance improvements for modest PCs

According to Microsoft, the 26H2 update promises significant performance improvements, particularly on modest PCs, with announced gains in responsiveness. The company states that Windows 11, version 26H2, is now available for all eligible devices and includes all recently announced features from the Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 versions.

Installation method and user support

The update will be deployed via the update technology, offering a quick installation. It is available through Windows Update on compatible PCs, allowing users to avoid reinstalling everything or complicating their setup. For users who do not receive the update through Windows Update, several methods are available to transition to Windows 11 26H2.

Continued support for Windows 10 and Linux options

If users are not eligible for Windows 11 or prefer to wait, they can continue using Windows 10, which still has extended support until October 12, 2027. Additionally, there is the option of switching to Linux, which continues to see a resurgence in popularity. A dedicated assistant is also available to assist users with the upgrade process.
