Microsoft completes Windows 11 26H2 rollout

Microsoft has finished rolling out Windows 11 26H2 to all eligible devices, making the update available to every compatible PC. The update was first released on September 29, but only to a limited number of machines before becoming widely accessible.

Update now available to all compatible devices

The update’s general availability was announced in Microsoft’s official documentation less than a month after its initial release. This is good news for users who were waiting for the update, as it should install quickly, taking only a few minutes.

Simplified upgrade process for users

Owners of compatible PCs running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 can now directly download 26H2 through Windows Update without waiting for a new distribution wave. This ease of access is partly due to the update’s design.

Minimal changes but extended support

Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 all share the same maintenance branch, meaning most of the improvements in 26H2 were already delivered through monthly updates. The transition to 26H2 requires only a small activation package and a system restart. While the update brings no major visible changes, it extends the system’s support period.

Security updates available until 2028 or 2029

Microsoft will provide security updates for Windows 11 26H2 until October 10, 2028, for Family and Pro editions, and until October 9, 2029, for Enterprise and Education editions. Users can install the update through Settings > Windows Update, where the new version should appear with a download and install button.

Options to delay or prioritize updates

Users can choose to prioritize new features by enabling the option "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" in Windows Update. Alternatively, they can disable this option to avoid automatic updates or temporarily pause updates for up to 35 days. However, this pause includes security patches.

Blocking the update without sacrificing security

To delay 26H2 longer without missing security updates, users can block the update using group policies on Windows 11 Pro or the Registry. A reminder: support for Windows 11 24H2 Family and Pro editions ended on October 13, so users are encouraged to upgrade to 25H2 or 26H2 to continue receiving security patches.
