Students visit war memorial
On Monday, October 12, 2026, students from the Joseph Néo school gathered on the plateau des Garaffes for an event focused on history and citizenship. Two classes, comprising 22 CM1 and 24 CE2 students, attended an in-depth presentation of the Elne war memorial at the request of the school. Event guided by teachers and experts
The event was guided by teachers Mmes Galéano and Gavilan, as well as Mr. Jubany. The students received support from the ACPG CATM Elne Montescot section and the French Memory Committee. Historical and ceremonial activities
Activities included a historical presentation of the monument by Mr. Charles Higuero, departmental president of ACPG CATM, aimed at sensitizing young generations to the memory of "Morts pour la France." The students also visited the headquarters of the veterans, where they explored objects and testimonies, and participated in a simulation of an official ceremony featuring the flag bearers, Mr. Bertrand and Jacques Poirson. Local officials participate
Local elected officials, including General Gilles Glin, municipal delegate for combatant memory, and Pascal Fillon, deputy mayor in charge of Schools, participated in the event. Event's educational goals
The initiative aimed to transmit collective memory, paying tribute to all combatants and victims from World War I to more recent conflicts, in line with legislative changes. It also sought to strengthen national cohesion by sensitizing students from cycle 3 to republican values, civic commitment, and the importance of building peace. Connecting students to heritage
The event allowed Illiberian schoolchildren to engage with their memorial heritage and understand the foundations of the Republic.
