The recent senatorial elections in the Alsace region of France were largely decided during the second round of municipal elections. The Ecologists, a left-wing political party, lost control of the mayoralty of Strasbourg, which resulted in the loss of many of their supporters—particularly mayors and members of territorial councils who have the power to elect senators. This loss significantly weakened their position in the senatorial elections. As a result, the only left-wing Alsatian senator, Jacques Fernique, was forced to step down in favor of the socialist candidate, Pernelle Richardot. Jacques Fernique received 313 votes in the recent election, which was 23 votes less than his opponent's total and 200 votes fewer than the number he received in 2020 when he was elected as part of a "left union" list. Fernique might be reflecting on the decision not to collaborate with La France insoumise, a leftist political movement. The list led by Emmanuel Fernandes, a member of that movement, secured 68 votes, which could have been beneficial for Fernique's campaign. On the other hand, Pernelle Richardot might be satisfied with her strategy of shifting towards the political center. This approach allowed her to avoid relying solely on socialist votes, which can be a risky move in elections. Another notable development was the re-election of Laurence Muller-Bronn. She was first elected in 2020 by benefiting from the support of the Alsatian right. Despite her re-election this time, she faced controversy due to her positions on vaccines and the health pass, which are measures related to public health during the pandemic. The Alsatian right, meanwhile, continues to demonstrate its strong local presence. In the Bas-Rhin department, they secured three out of the five available seats, and in the Haut-Rhin, they obtained two out of the four seats. In addition to these, there are representatives from other political groups in the Haut-Rhin, including Ludovic Haye from the Horizons party and Benjamin Huin from the Renaissance party.
