Germany's DB Fernverkehr is using Siemens Vectron Dual Mode locomotives to haul ICE L trains on non-electrified routes, following Alstom Traxx shortages.
Vectron Dual Mode locomotives in service
The Vectron Dual Mode BR 248.5 locomotives have been operating ICE L trains on non-electrified tracks since May 2026, following a shortage of Alstom Traxx diesel locomotives. These locomotives are now used on routes like Itzehoe to Westerland (Sylt) and Dortmund to Oberstdorf.Testing before passenger service
Before being deployed on passenger routes, the Vectron Dual Mode locomotives were tested with various DB group operators, including DB Cargo and DB Bahnbau Gruppe, as well as private freight companies, to ensure their reliability and performance.Origins of the contract
DB Cargo initiated a procurement process in October 2019 for up to 400 dual-mode locomotives. Siemens Mobility secured the contract in August 2020, with a framework agreement and a firm order for 150 Vectron DM Light locomotives signed in September 2020.Technical specifications of the heavy version
The heavy version of the Vectron DM locomotives, identified by the 248 series, has a power output of 2,400 kW in electric mode and 2,000 kW in diesel mode. It uses an MTU 16V 4000 R84 diesel engine, can reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and has an axle load of 22.5 tonnes.
