Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has suggested the club might have made a better decision during the summer transfer window by pursuing Unai Simon from Athletic Bilbao instead of signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for around £18 million. Lammens, a 24-year-old goalkeeper, made 33 appearances for United last season and was praised for his performances, but he has struggled in the new campaign, conceding six goals in the first three Premier League matches. His difficulties were highlighted after a 2-2 draw with Everton, where he was beaten at his near post by Tyrique George, and substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a long-range goal that drew criticism. Meulensteen acknowledged Lammens' strong performances last season but believes he is not yet fully developed. He pointed to Simon’s impressive displays during Spain’s World Cup campaign, describing him as a World Cup winner with a commanding presence that Lammens has not yet achieved. Simon, a goalkeeper for Athletic Bilbao, has been widely regarded as one of the top talents in European football and could have provided a more experienced and confident presence in the United goal. In addition to his comments on the goalkeeper situation, Meulensteen expressed concerns about the depth of United’s squad. The club spent over £150 million on new recruits, including Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba, to strengthen the midfield. Meulensteen suggested that the focus on midfield additions might indicate that the next transfer window could be dedicated to reinforcing the defense, which has been a concern for the club in recent seasons. Meulensteen believes Manchester United should aim to compete for the Premier League title and questioned whether the current squad would be strong enough to progress beyond the Champions League quarterfinals. The club will look to regain form in their upcoming Champions League group-stage match against Sabah, followed by a crucial Manchester derby against Manchester City.
