On October 9, the Diocese of Saint-Denis will mark its 60th anniversary. A special celebration is planned for October 18 at the basilica, in collaboration with the Pontifical Missionary Works (OPM), an organization that supports missionary activities worldwide. This event seeks to highlight the diocese's long-standing missionary efforts in the 93, a department in the north of Paris, and to showcase the vitality of its younger Christian communities. The diocese was established on October 9, 1966, by Pope Paul VI, at the same time as the creation of the department of Saint-Denis. This anniversary also aligns with the OPM's 100th anniversary of the Sunday of Missions, a global event held annually to raise funds for local churches in over 140 countries. Bishop Étienne Guillet emphasized that Saint-Denis has a deep historical connection to the evangelization of the Paris region. Saint Denis, the city's namesake, was one of the earliest Christian missionaries in the area and was buried in the basilica. This rich heritage strengthens the diocese's partnership with the OPM, which focuses on spreading the Gospel in regions where Christianity is less known. Many members of the diocese, including lay people, religious individuals, and priests, were baptized in foreign countries before joining the community in France, reflecting the universal nature of the Church. The anniversary also highlights the significant role of young people in the diocese's communities, such as those in Évry and Pontoise. While these communities are smaller than those in Paris or Versailles, they are described as being deeply centered on Christ. Young people from the diocese were notably present at a youth vigil with Pope Francis at the Stade de France on September 25. The OPM expressed satisfaction that today's missionaries are increasingly found in the 93, as young people are more actively sharing their faith through personal encounters with Jesus. Last Easter, more than 550 adult baptisms were celebrated within the diocese, with most of the newly baptized individuals aged between 18 and 25. The festive day on October 18 will begin with a march from the Notre-Dame des Missions church in Épinay to the Saint-Denis basilica. At 1:30 p.m., various activities will be offered, including workshops, conferences, and missionary stands, with a special round table discussion on the theme "Living the Mission with the OPM." The day will conclude with a solemn mass presided over by Bishop Guillet at 4:30 p.m.
