Opeti Helu debuts in Top 14

Opeti Helu, a 28-year-old Tongan rugby player, will make his debut in the Top 14 French rugby league on Saturday, October 31, playing for LOU against Vannes. Helu has spent the past seven seasons playing professionally in Japan and will start in the starting XV for the Lyon-based team.

Helu's background and career

Born in Tonga in 1998, Helu was trained at Newington College in Australia and has primarily played for the Kubota Spears in Japan. His time in Japan earned him a spot in the Japanese national team in 2024, and he is known by the nickname "Big O."

Delayed debut due to injury

Helu was signed by LOU for two seasons this summer but was expected to debut at the start of the season. However, a muscle injury sustained during training delayed his debut, which will now occur during the eighth match of the season. The LOU coaching staff has decided to start him immediately, showing their confidence in his abilities and experience.

Helu's physicality and role

With his 127 kg frame, Helu is well-suited for physical battles on the field. However, his role as a right wing requires more than just physical strength; it demands good support skills, positioning, and the ability to withstand opposing pressure in tight scrums. His adaptation to the pace of the Top 14 will be a key point of interest.

LOU's lineup changes

In the match against Vannes, Helu will form the front line with Guillaume Marchand and Thomas Moukoro. The LOU coaching staff has retained eleven of the fifteen starting players from their previous match against Bayonne, changing only the two wing positions. This decision aims to maintain team continuity while introducing fresh talent to the front line.

Expectations for Helu's performance

For Helu, this debut is primarily about regaining match fitness and adapting to the demands of the Top 14. The challenge will be to hold his position in the scrum and perform effectively in open play, including rucks and offensive sequences. At 28, Helu brings a solid professional background to LOU, and his performance in the French championship will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
