The French Basketball Federation (FFBB) has asked amateur basketball clubs to take part in a special event on October 10 and 11, 2026, to highlight the importance of respecting referees and all players involved in the game. This event is part of the La Poste Arbitration Days, a larger initiative running from October 6 to 15, 2026, which focuses on improving the treatment of referees in sports. The event comes after two studies by La Poste, a French postal service and logistics company, showed that many people in France believe that rude behavior and violence in sports have increased over the past decade. According to the studies, eight out of ten French people think incivilities and violence have grown, and about half of those involved in team sports—either as players or parents—have seen or experienced such behavior on the court. Referees are especially targeted, with 56% of the French believing they are the main victims of these actions, and 84% thinking that the role of referees should be appreciated and protected more. The studies also suggest that small steps, such as making referees more approachable, teaching players about fair play, and having discussions before matches, can help change attitudes. In response, the FFBB is encouraging its clubs to follow a specific protocol during their amateur matches on October 10 and 11, 2026, across all levels of competition. Ten minutes before the game starts, referees, team captains, and coaches will meet in the center of the court to reaffirm three key principles: respecting the referee’s decisions, respecting all players, and enjoying the game with good sportsmanship. A group photo of referees, players, and coaches will be taken to symbolize this shared commitment. Clubs are encouraged to share these photos on social media using the hashtag #TousArbitres. The FFBB hopes this initiative will remind everyone that respecting referees is a shared responsibility and a crucial part of making sports fair and enjoyable. The La Poste Arbitration Days in 2026 are focused on three main goals: protecting referees from abuse, raising awareness of their important role, and inspiring more people to become referees. By bringing together players, coaches, and referees, the event aims to create a more respectful and positive environment for everyone involved in basketball.
