Price drop for SanDisk microSD card

A SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSD card became available on Amazon on Tuesday, October 13, at a price of 10 euros, which is a 60% reduction from its listed price of 24.99 euros. This price had not been seen since the beginning of the year, according to Keepa history, a service that tracks price changes over time.

Product positioning and features

The card is part of the SanDisk Ultra range, which is positioned below the Extreme cards designed for 4K video. It features up to 140 MB/s read speed with a compatible reader, A1 certification for installing apps on Android smartphones, a 10-year manufacturer warranty, and an SD adapter included.

Format and compatibility

The card is available in the microSDXC format, primarily aimed at Android smartphones and tablets. The included SD adapter allows use in compact cameras and card readers on laptops, expanding its utility beyond mobile devices.

Performance and certification

The A1 certification guarantees minimal random access performance, allowing for the installation and launching of applications directly from the card without too much latency. The card operates from -25 °C to 85 °C and benefits from a 10-year manufacturer warranty.

Speed and limitations

SanDisk claims up to 140 MB/s read speed on this capacity, which exceeds the theoretical limit of 104 MB/s of the UHS-I interface thanks to a proprietary technology. A compatible reader is required to reach this speed, with a standard reader resulting in lower speeds. Writing is slower, and SanDisk does not provide an exact figure.

Use cases and limitations

The card is classified as U1 and Class 10, meaning a guaranteed minimum write speed of 10 MB/s, sufficient for Full HD video but not for 4K, which SanDisk reserves for its Extreme certified V30. For continuous recording use, such as with a dashcam or surveillance camera, SanDisk offers its High Endurance range, which is better suited for this type of use. The 64 GB capacity is sufficient for expanding the game library of a retro console under Android or storing playlists and offline maps, but can fill up quickly if recording a lot in Full HD.
