AMD confirmed on October 7 that its FSR 4 upscaling technology will be available on APU (Advanced Processing Units) equipped with RDNA 3.5 graphics by the end of 2026. Initially, FSR 4 was reserved for the newer RDNA 4 architecture found in Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards. However, this summer, AMD expanded access to the previous generation RDNA 3 (Radeon RX 7000) cards, with FSR 4.1 arriving in June through the Adrenalin 26.6.2 driver. Image generation, a key feature of FSR 4, remains exclusive to RDNA 4 cards, and AMD has not clarified whether APU will be an exception.
Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Computing and Graphics Group, announced during a press meeting in Seoul that FSR 4 would be extended to all AMD products by the end of the year. This includes APU, gaming laptops, and portable devices. Huynh outlined two projects: a lightweight FSR 4 model optimized for existing APU with a focus on image quality and low latency, and new APU launching by year-end. These new APU may be equipped with RDNA 4 graphics, the same architecture as Radeon RX 9000, according to The Elec.
While AMD has not yet released a compatibility list, the first devices affected are expected to include portable gaming consoles such as the ROG Xbox Ally X with Ryzen Z2 Extreme, as well as ultraportable PCs and mini-PCs with AMD Strix Point / Strix Halo APU (Ryzen AI 300 / Ryzen AI Max+ 300) and Gorgon Point / Gorgon Halo (Ryzen AI 400 / Ryzen AI Max+ 400). AMD had previously announced FSR 4.1 for older RDNA 2 graphics cards (Radeon RX 6000) in early 2027, but the company has prioritized integrating the technology into its APU over updating the Radeon RX 6000.
Owners of the Steam Deck are not affected by this update, as its APU is based on RDNA 2 graphics, the same generation as Radeon RX 6000. The transition to RDNA 3.5 APU likely required additional optimizations or even a different model, as FSR 4 was designed to work with FP8 data supported by RDNA 4, which RDNA 3 / 3.5 does not support. For Radeon RX 7000, AMD had to convert the model to INT8. AMD has not provided a specific list of compatible processors, driver versions, or exact dates beyond "by the end of the year." It is also unclear whether all APU families will be supported at the same time. Performance figures for the lightweight FSR 4 on integrated graphics will only be known when the first compatible drivers are released.
