AMD may launch RDNA 5 earlier than expected

According to a report from Wccftech, AMD may release its RDNA 5 graphics architecture earlier than previously thought, possibly in the second half of 2027. The information comes from an anonymous source known as Kepler_L2, who shared the rumor on the AnandTech forums. This would be sooner than some earlier speculation that pointed to a 2028 release.

First RDNA 5 GPU may feature 40 or 70 compute units

The report suggests that the first RDNA 5 GPU to reach the market could be the AT2 chip, which is said to have 40 compute units. However, other rumors indicate that the number might be increased to 70. The AT2 chip is also expected to use GDDR7 memory, though the 4 GB and 6 GB variants might be too costly for mass adoption.

AMD may not launch at Computex 2027

Kepler_L2 believes that a launch at Computex 2027, which is scheduled for June 1 to 4, 2027, is unlikely. Instead, AMD may use the event to reveal details about the new architecture. However, the exact release date remains uncertain, as AMD has not officially confirmed any roadmap for the RDNA 5 launch.

RDNA 5 line may be released in 2028

The report also mentions that the rest of the RDNA 5 line may not be released until 2028. This would allow AMD to introduce its new architecture before the arrival of NVIDIA's next-generation GPUs, expected in 2028. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is rumored to launch a GeForce RTX 5080 24 GB during the first quarter of 2027.

Market competition remains intense

The market is currently tense, and both AMD and NVIDIA are likely waiting to see how the market evolves before positioning themselves in 2028. This suggests that both companies are carefully timing their product releases to gain a competitive advantage.
