Sigma has announced the release of its new 85mm F1.2 DG Art lens, which is part of the company's Art series—known for high-quality, ultra-bright fixed focal length lenses. Designed primarily for portrait photography, the lens provides a focal length that allows photographers to frame subjects tightly while maintaining a comfortable distance. This new lens is available in Sony E and L-Mount formats, making it compatible with cameras from Sony, Lumix, Leica, and Sigma.
The lens features an ultra-bright maximum aperture of f/1.2, the brightest Sigma has ever produced, allowing for exceptional low-light performance and dramatic depth of field effects. The circular diaphragm, composed of 13 blades, contributes to smooth bokeh—the aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus areas in a photo. The optical design includes 17 lens elements arranged in 12 groups, with advanced components such as two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) lenses, one high anomalous dispersion lens, and four aspherical elements. These help reduce chromatic aberration, flare, and unwanted light reflections, especially in backlit conditions.
Despite its advanced optical design, the lens is relatively compact, measuring about 12 cm in length and 9 cm in diameter, and weighing around 900 grams. This is lighter than similar lenses from competitors like Canon and Nikon, which typically weigh around 1.2 kg. The lens includes practical features such as a notched or continuous diaphragm ring for precise aperture control, two programmable buttons for custom functions, and weather resistance. The front lens is treated with hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings to repel water and oil, making it more durable in various shooting conditions.
Autofocus performance is handled by a dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor, which is known for its speed, precision, and quiet operation. This is particularly beneficial for video work, as the lens is optimized to minimize focus breathing—a slight change in the image's size or perspective when the focus shifts. This helps maintain a stable visual experience during video recording.
The Sigma 85mm F1.2 DG Art will be available starting September 30 at a price of 1499 €. It joins other lenses in the Art series, including the 35mm F1.2 DG II Art, 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art, and the recently launched 135mm F1.4 DG Art. A slightly less bright version, the 85mm F1.4 DG Art, is already available for 1099 €. Notably, Sony, Lumix, and Leica do not currently offer an 85mm f/1.2 lens in their product lines, making Sigma's release a significant addition to the market.
