Google introduces new file-sharing tool

Google announced a new software development kit (SDK) called Quick Share at the Android Dev Summit 2026. This tool will let app developers add Google’s file-sharing features directly into their apps, making it easier for users to send files between nearby devices.

SDK details and release timeline

The Quick Share SDK, described by 9to5Google on November 2, will be available for Android and iOS in the first half of 2027. This means apps like messaging services or photo galleries will be able to send files without requiring users to leave the app.

Improved file transfer process

Currently, users must open a system share menu, choose Quick Share, and go through a full-screen interface to transfer files. The new SDK will simplify this by allowing transfers without needing a network connection, including on iPhones.

No network needed for transfers

The SDK will create its own Wi-Fi access point or use Wi-Fi Direct on compatible devices, connecting two devices without a router. This means users can transfer photos and videos without compression, even without a mobile network.

Security and user experience features

Google promises end-to-end encryption, ensuring files are only readable by the sender and recipient. The SDK also includes a feature called Tap to Share, which lets users share files by bringing two phones close together, with a preview panel appearing at the bottom of the screen.

iOS integration and developer involvement

The iOS version of Quick Share builds on a feature introduced in November 2025 when the Pixel 10 could exchange files with Apple’s AirDrop. However, iPhone apps will need to be updated by developers to include the feature, and Google has not specified a release date or a list of partner apps. The SDK may be available until the end of June 2027.
