Region Réunion responds to criticism

The Region Réunion has expressed regret over recent comments made by Patrice Selly, stating that the remarks follow a confrontational tone rather than promoting constructive dialogue. The Region emphasized the need for responsible, objective, and solution-oriented public debate.

Consultations with Saint-Benoît have continued

The Region highlighted that consultations with the commune of Saint-Benoît regarding the Regional Development Plan, known as the SAR, have been ongoing for over four years. Multiple meetings have been held to address the commune's requests and concerns.

SAR seminar and meetings initiated

After the municipal and community elections in March 2026, President Huguette Bello organized a seminar on the SAR on May 19, 2026, bringing together all local authorities. This was followed by bilateral meetings and exchanges with all communes and intercommunalities based on the Region’s initial proposal.

Modifications to SAR project made

The SAR project was revised to incorporate the opinions and proposals of the partners. The Region sent letters to each commune and EPCI, detailing the results of the consultation and decisions made, including to the mayor of Saint-Benoît and the CIREST and its member communes.

SAR project presented to development commission

The revised SAR project was presented to the 65 member institutions of the SAR Development Commission (CESAR) on September 30. The mayor of Saint-Benoît was given the opportunity to express his opinion on the project.

Majority of Saint-Benoît's requests considered

The majority of Saint-Benoît’s requests, as well as those from the CIREST and the communes in the East, have been considered, provided they were justified and did not compromise the overall balance of the regional development project. The CESAR members have praised the quality of the consultation and the document presented.

SAR project includes development initiatives

The SAR project aims for balanced territorial development, supporting economic growth in the East and enhancing the region’s attractiveness. It includes many development projects carried out by the East communes, such as the expansion of the Beauvallon business area and the Beaufond agri-food cluster.

Saint-Benoît's position raises concerns

The position of the Saint-Benoît commune, which challenges the residential development objectives proposed to it and assumes a demographic stagnation of its territory, raises questions about its willingness to engage in a catch-up dynamic with the East area. The complaints are based on no serious study, no concrete project, or any substantiated justification.

SAR project not yet finalized

The SAR project is not yet finalized. According to regulations, the final version will be submitted to the opinion of the associated public authorities (PPA), including the communes, and will also undergo a public inquiry where the population can express its views.

Final approval process to follow

The full Regional Council Assembly will have to express an opinion on the finalized document in early 2027, before its adoption and approval by the State. These consultation phases, both voluntary and regulatory, ensure real consultation and a balanced territorial project, attentive to each partner while making responsible choices for the future of Réunion.
