Westlife singer Mark Feehily has taken legal action against bariatric surgeon Nick Carter, claiming medical negligence following a weight-loss surgery in August 2020. The High Court claim, filed by Feehily’s legal team at Leigh Day Solicitors, alleges that Mr. Carter did not remove enough stomach tissue during a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, leading to a leak and severe abdominal infections. This resulted in recurring sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to infection. The complications from the surgery had a significant impact on Feehily’s health. The 46-year-old Irish singer eventually required a full gastrectomy in 2023, where his entire stomach was removed. As a result, he has been unable to continue his role with the pop group Westlife, taking a hiatus from the band in February 2024. Mr. Carter has denied any negligence in the procedure, and the case is currently ongoing in the High Court. Westlife, which was formed in 1998, has continued its 25th anniversary world tour as a trio. The group, known for hits such as Swear It Again and Flying Without Wings, has sold over 55 million records worldwide and has 14 UK number-one singles to its name. Despite Feehily’s absence, the remaining members are performing the tour, celebrating the band’s long and successful career. The legal proceedings have drawn attention to the potential risks and complications associated with bariatric surgery, a type of weight-loss procedure that involves altering the digestive system. These surgeries are commonly performed to help individuals with severe obesity lose weight, but they carry risks such as infections, leaks, and long-term health issues. The case highlights the importance of proper medical care and informed consent in such procedures.
