DDR5 RAM prices in Germany have skyrocketed by 544% compared to the baseline level before the RAM crisis began in July 2025, according to a report by 3D Center. This is a sharp rise from the 486% increase recorded in August and the 419% in June, which had remained relatively stable for much of the year. The steep price surge has made it more expensive for consumers to purchase or upgrade their computers, particularly those looking to build or enhance their desktop systems.
Dell has also made changes to its pricing strategy for its popular XPS 13 laptop in the US. Rather than directly raising the base price, the company introduced a new, lower-storage entry-level model. Previously, the XPS 13 with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage started at $699. Now, the new model with 256GB of storage is priced at $699, while the original model with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage has increased to $799, a $100 rise. Similarly, the XPS 13 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage has also gone up by $100 to $999. While students can get a $100 discount, the 256GB storage option may not be enough for many users who require more space.
In the US, the price of 32GB of DDR5-5600 RAM has climbed to $409, up from $72 before the memory crisis. This marks a 5.5 times increase, matching the inflation seen in Germany. The steep rise in RAM prices has made it harder for users to future-proof their desktop PCs. Choosing 16GB of RAM instead of 32GB can save around $200, but this comes with the trade-off of potentially reduced performance and longevity of the system. This increase is compounded by rising prices for other components such as solid-state drives (SSDs) and graphics processing units (GPUs).
The sharp increase in DDR5 prices signals a worsening situation in the memory market, with predictions that prices will continue to rise through the second half of 2026 and possibly into 2027. These price hikes are already affecting the cost of laptops, as seen with the Dell XPS 13. The rising cost of RAM is impacting all device manufacturers, making it difficult to determine launch prices for new products. As a result, consumers are facing higher costs across the board for both components and assembled systems.
