XMG, a manufacturer of high-performance laptops, has announced price increases for most of its models, with most seeing a rise of €100 to €150 and one model increasing by €300. The company attributes the increases to a sharp rise in the cost of components, including memory, storage, and processors. These price hikes come amid a broader global shortage and increased demand for advanced computing components.
One of the main factors behind the rising costs is the price of DDR5 laptop RAM, which has increased nearly sixfold since the memory shortage began in mid-2025. According to data from Geizhals, a German price-tracking website, the dramatic rise in memory prices has significantly impacted the cost of building laptops. This increase is not limited to RAM alone—other components such as PCBs (printed circuit boards), SSDs (solid-state drives), CPUs (central processing units), and graphics cards have also seen price surges.
Micron, a major memory manufacturer, has reportedly stopped producing 2GB modules of GDDR7, a type of high-speed video memory used in some of Nvidia’s latest RTX 5000 GPUs. This move has raised concerns about the availability of this critical component for gaming graphics cards. However, Micron is only a minor supplier for Nvidia, and most of the GDDR7 used in these GPUs comes from Samsung and SK Hynix. This means that the impact of Micron's decision is likely to be limited.
In addition to rising component costs, XMG has cited increased shipping expenses as another factor driving up prices. Rising air freight costs and challenges with maritime shipping have made it more expensive for notebook manufacturers to transport components and finished products. Despite these increases, XMG emphasized that it is not profiting from the higher prices, stating that the hikes are necessary to cover the rising costs of materials and logistics.
