Wero, a European payment platform, is broadening its services beyond simple peer-to-peer transfers to include e-commerce payments. Fnac-Darty, a major French retail group, is set to integrate Wero on its two online shopping platforms, marking a significant step for the service. Wero already supports popular digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal, and online sales accounted for over 21% of Fnac-Darty's business in the first half of 2026. This expansion aims to provide a more direct and cost-effective way for customers to make purchases online. Wero’s payment method works by using instant account-to-account transfers. Instead of entering a card number, customers confirm transactions through their bank’s app. This system skips traditional payment networks like Visa and Mastercard, which typically charge fees. By bypassing these networks, Wero helps merchants avoid paying commissions to American payment companies, potentially reducing transaction costs significantly. Wero is backed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a collaboration of major European banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, and BPCE. Launched in France in 2024 as a replacement for Paylib, Wero has grown rapidly and is now a key player in Europe. The EPI reported that Wero has over 43.5 million users and has processed more than 100 million transactions. In September 2026, Wero officially launched its e-commerce payment service in France, with Orange being the first merchant to adopt it. Around twenty more stores, including Kiabi, E.Leclerc, Lidl, Decathlon, and Veepee, are expected to join by the end of the year. Fnac-Darty's decision to use Wero represents a shift from peer-to-peer payments to real online commerce, signaling the service’s growing importance in the retail sector. Fabrice Le Gall, head of France for the EPI, told LSA that Wero transactions can cost between 20% and 60% less than traditional card payments, depending on the merchant. The EPI has set a goal to challenge Apple Pay's dominance in Europe by 2027, positioning Wero as a key competitor in the digital payment landscape.
