Unions criticize demonstration restrictions

Unions in the Hérault department have criticized the restrictions placed on demonstrations by the local prefect, arguing that these measures limit democratic freedoms and the right to express opinions. They believe the restrictions are excessive and not in line with how demonstrations are handled in other parts of France.

Demonstration ban condemned

On Sunday, November 1, unions such as Force ouvrière de l'enseignement (FO ESR), SNUDI-FO 34, and SNFOLC 34 reiterated their condemnation of the ban on demonstrations issued by the prefect for Saturday, October 31. They argued that in other areas like Paris, demonstrations can take place with certain adjustments, but in Montpellier, the goal seemed to be to prevent all gatherings.

Rail cancellations linked to restrictions

SUD Rail, another union, highlighted that train services from Lunel and Sète to Montpellier were canceled for the second week in a row. The union attributed this to the demonstration restrictions imposed by the Hérault prefecture. It urged railway workers to speak out and emphasized that public transportation should facilitate movement, not hinder social mobilization.

Call for large-scale mobilization

In response to the restrictions, unions are planning a large-scale mobilization on Thursday, November 5, as part of the general strike organized by the intersyndical. They aim to show their opposition to the measures and to support broader social demands.
