Adaptation of Notre-Dame de Paris

An adaptation of Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo, titled ANÁΓKH by Augustine Pouplin, is currently being staged at the Theatre de l'Epée de Bois, La Cartoucherie, Vincenne, from 19 November to 6 December 2026. The production is directed by Augustine Pouplin and Lucie Matéo and reimagines the setting of the original work in a world without a specific era, yet one that remains recognizable to audiences.

Reimagined Setting

The cathedral in the production is portrayed not as a fixed monument but as a dynamic, metal body and a vertical bastion. It serves as a stone theater where aspects of humanity—poverty, loneliness, desire, and power—collide, offering a new perspective on the original story’s themes.

Focus on Stark Portrayal

The adaptation does not focus on historical reconstruction, folklore, or romantic elements typically associated with the original novel. Instead, it presents a stark portrayal of individuals caught in a society that consumes them, emphasizing the struggles and conflicts faced by the characters.

Cast and Production Team

The production features Augustine Pouplin, Lucie Matéo, Nemo Vincens, Roman Bidotti, Cedrick Spinassou, and Elliot Castan in leading roles. Costume design is by Lucie Matéo, and sound and lighting are handled by Amit K. Babooa.
