Organic food producers face supply challenges in 2026, with eggs, butter, and cocoa hit hardest. Climate and global prices are key factors.
Supply issues in organic products
One third of companies that transform organic food products faced supply difficulties in 2026, with eggs and butter being especially affected. The findings come from a survey called the Barometer of the morale of organic transformers, conducted by Crédoc for Agence Bio, based on responses from 874 participants in the spring of 2026.Strong supply tensions
Supply tensions remain strong in organic products, with companies reporting challenges in obtaining various items. Organic butter and eggs were mentioned first, but issues also extended to fruits like hazelnuts, vegetables, wheat, and sugar. Tensions over cocoa, chocolate, and coffee remain very strong as well.Global price surge affects production
The surge in prices on the global market has diverted some producers away from the organic circuit. The issue of the price of organic butter is particularly highlighted, as it has become a significant concern for many companies involved in transforming organic products.Egg production decline
According to Synalaf, the decline in organic egg production is linked to the switch to 100% organic feed, which is considered unbalanced. This has led to technical underperformance, discouraging some farmers from continuing with organic egg production.French origin under tension
French origin is under tension in the organic sector, with 7% of companies mentioning supply difficulties related to French-sourced products. The most cited cause for these issues is the climate, which has impacted agricultural production and supply chains.Regional sourcing trends
More than nine out of ten transformers source their supplies in France, and one out of five companies declares a 100% regional organic sourcing strategy. The share of regional organic sourcing is stronger for companies that exclusively work with organic products rather than conventional ones.Future of French sourcing
The share of French origin in organic product sourcing is expected to remain predominant in the coming years. Only 5% of respondents plan to reduce their reliance on French-sourced products, while 55% intend to maintain their current sourcing strategy and 15% plan to increase it.
