Organic milk faces a decline due to drought, but fresh organic desserts and yogurts see a sales revival.
Organic milk sales decline due to drought
Fresh desserts, organic yogurts, and packaged organic milk are seeing a sales revival in stores, but the collection of organic cow's milk is declining, especially in regions affected by drought. According to FranceAgriMer, 735,361 million liters of organic cow's milk were collected between January and August 2026, a 3.8% drop from the same period in 2025.Drought impacts milk production in spring
The decline in organic milk collection began in spring, with volumes 3.5% higher than the previous year in the first quarter. However, starting in April, the volumes dropped below those of 2025. From April to August 2026, the average collection was 7.7% lower than the same months in 2025, with an 11.3% drop in August.Weather effects more severe on organic farms
The hot summer has significantly impacted organic milk production, with drought limiting grass growth and reducing grazing opportunities. Heat waves have also reduced milk yields. These effects are more pronounced in organic farming due to its reliance on grass-based systems. The share of organic milk in total collection fell to 4% in August, down from 5% in April and 4.6% in August 2025.Fewer organic farmers but decline slows
The number of organic milk suppliers has decreased, with 3,473 suppliers in August 2026, 190 fewer than in 2025. However, the decline has slowed compared to the previous year, where the drop was 7%. Experts warn that the 2026 drought could have long-term effects, with concerns about de-capitalization in organic dairy farms compared to conventional ones.Household purchases of organic dairy vary
According to Kantar data, household purchases of organic dairy products show mixed trends. Fresh organic cheeses have seen a 19.4% increase, while fresh organic desserts rose by 4%. In contrast, cow's milk cheeses and butter have both declined, with butter down 13.9%. FranceAgriMer does not publish liquid milk data for home consumption but notes an overall increase in GMS volumes.Dairy companies focus on fresh products
Dairy companies are shifting production toward ultra-fresh products. Fresh cheese and dessert production rose by 21.1% and 19% respectively over the first eight months of 2026. Yogurt and fermented milk production also increased, while non-fresh cow's cheese and butter production declined. Half of the organic milk produced in the first half of the year was used for yogurts and fermented milk, excluding packaged milk.
