A driver allegedly attempted to escape police by diving into the River Thames after a high-speed chase that spanned ten miles. The incident began when police tried to pull over a car on the M4 near Heathrow Airport. The driver refused to stop and was pursued for several miles before crashing into three other vehicles on Kew Bridge Road. The collision led to a dramatic conclusion as the suspect reportedly fled the car and jumped into the river. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one man, in his 50s, being taken to the hospital as a precaution and an elderly woman in her 80s receiving treatment on-site before being transported to the hospital. Both were reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A topless man was later seen being detained by police on the muddy banks of the Thames around 2pm on Sunday. According to a witness, the suspect's car had flat tires, making it sound like it was "driving on rims" as it crossed the bridge. Ethan Connelly, a witness who was walking near the Thames path, described seeing police officers and the suspect in handcuffs. He told Metro: "We were walking along the Thames path back from towards the bridge. Along the way we passed three or four groups of officers and also the group with the man in handcuffs on the bank. We saw him get taken away. We heard that he had crashed on the bridge and jumped into the river. I hope everyone involved is okay." According to the Metropolitan Police, the driver, a 25-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft, and possession of an offensive weapon. The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed about the incident. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the police on 101.
