Scarlets director of rugby Nigel Davies has said that recent discussions about the future of Welsh rugby have motivated his team as they prepare for the new season. The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is considering reducing the number of men's professional teams from four to three by 2028. This would mean Ospreys and Scarlets competing for the single team spot representing west Wales. The WRU plans to finalize the decision by the end of the 2026-27 season, with the new structure expected to begin in the 2028-29 season. Cardiff and Dragons are expected to retain their licenses in the capital and the east of Wales, respectively. Davies highlighted the importance of local rivalries and the rich history of the Scarlets, noting that their stadium, Parc y Scarlets, is a unique facility. He praised the club’s board and legacy, as well as its role in developing rugby talent in west Wales. Both Scarlets and Ospreys have been successful in producing Welsh internationals, but Davies expressed concern about the current rugby pathway for young players. He pointed out that talent identification now begins at age 16, making it harder for young players and their families to see a clear path to professional rugby. Davies took on the role of interim director of rugby halfway through the previous season and was formally appointed in a permanent role this summer. He mentioned that adapting to the culture of the current player group has been a learning experience for him. The Scarlets are set to kick off their United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign with a home match against Cardiff on Saturday night at 7:45 PM BST. This match will be a significant early test for the team as they aim to build on the momentum from the recent discussions about the future of Welsh rugby.
