IPVanish, a company known for offering virtual private network (VPN) services, has expanded its offerings by adding an antivirus module to its Windows and macOS applications. This new feature is available to users on the Complete and Advanced subscription plans. Previously, IPVanish used Threat Protection to block harmful websites, ads, and trackers, but only when the user was connected to its VPN. Now, the antivirus scans the device directly, even when the VPN is not in use, looking for phishing attempts, scams, malware, and ransomware.
The antivirus scans every website, download, and file accessed on the device, helping to identify hidden threats on otherwise legitimate sites. Any downloaded files that are identified as malicious are automatically quarantined to prevent them from affecting the rest of the system. Users can choose from three scan types: Quick Scan for regular checks, Full Scan for a more thorough weekly scan, and Folder Scan to check a specific folder. On Windows, there is also a network protection feature that detects suspicious activity and blocks potential attacks before they can cause harm.
The antivirus technology used by IPVanish comes from VIPRE, a company with over 25 years of experience in cybersecurity that has protected more than a million devices. VIPRE received an Advanced+ rating in a malware protection test by AV-Comparatives in March 2026. This same technology was previously used in IPVanish’s Link Checker module, which helped identify unsafe links.
IPVanish is not the only company broadening its services. McAfee, another cybersecurity provider, recently added a VPN to its new product suite. This feature automatically activates when users connect to public Wi-Fi and includes tools to analyze messages for potential scams.
IPVanish now offers three different subscription plans for the first time. The Essential plan, which includes the VPN and Threat Protection, costs 2.15 euros per month over a two-year period. The Complete plan, priced at 2.78 euros per month, adds the antivirus and phone support. The Advanced subscription, at 3.23 euros per month, includes the Secure Browser and 1 terabyte of cloud storage. Current subscribers can access the antivirus without paying extra.
On Windows, the antivirus is installed automatically in the background, but on macOS, users must manually launch it from the Antivirus tab. IPVanish has not clarified whether the scans remain fully local or if any data is sent to the company, which is an important consideration for a tool that accesses files on the user’s device.
