Actor Melanie Walters has shared that her co-stars from the popular BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey have been very supportive of her recent appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, a popular British dance competition show. Among those expressing excitement is Joanna Page, who plays her on-screen partner in the sitcom. Walters, known for her role as Gwen West in Gavin and Stacey, is now paired with professional dancer Aljaz Skorjanec for the new series. She described being matched with Skorjanec as a "dream come true" following their first dance at the show's launch event. Walters mentioned that her Gavin and Stacey co-stars had sent her "lovely messages," with Page in particular showing enthusiasm for her participation. When asked if she would bring any elements of her character from the comedy into the dance competition, Walters joked, "I've got no idea, this is Aljaz's department." She also admitted, "I've got no idea what's going to happen on that ballroom," highlighting the unpredictability of the show. Walters told the Press Association that being asked to join Strictly Come Dancing was "mind-boggling" and "a bit out of my comfort zone." She noted that she had not previously participated in panel or quiz shows and that appearing on a dance competition was "not what I'm used to putting out there, because I'm quite a private person." To prepare, she is attending "weekly masterclasses" and aims to "learn to dance properly." Melanie Walters has had a long and varied career in television, film, and theater. She first gained fame with her role in Gavin and Stacey, which began in 2007 and included a 2024 Christmas special. She has also appeared in TV shows like Coronation Street, Beyond Paradise, Being Human, Hollyoaks, Biff And Chip, and Doc Martin. Her film credits include Submarine, Resistance, High Tide, and Save The Cinema. On stage, she has performed in productions such as The Importance Of Being Earnest, Blood Brothers, Twelfth Night, Educating Rita, and What's New Pussycat? Recently, she appeared in two series of the BBC's crime drama Death Valley.
