Target has voluntarily recalled two types of Up&Up baby wipes after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) found harmful bacteria in samples of the products. The recalled items are the Up&Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and the Up&Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes. The FDA identified the presence of two contaminants, Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, which can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable groups like newborns, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems. These bacteria can lead to conditions such as skin infections, sepsis, and pneumonia, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. The affected products include the Up&Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes in package sizes of 20, 72, 216, 800, and 1200 counts, with expiration dates ranging from May 10, 2028, to November 5, 2028. The Up&Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes in 72, 216, and 800 counts are also included, with expiration dates from June 29, 2028, to June 30, 2028. The FDA has urged consumers who have these products to stop using them immediately and return them to any Target store for a full refund. Those with questions can contact Target’s Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680 for further assistance. Dr. Sharon Nachman, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Stony Brook Medicine, explained that newborns often have sensitive or broken skin, which can make them more susceptible to bacterial infections. She emphasized that signs like strange odors or discoloration in baby wipes can indicate bacterial growth and contamination. To reduce the risk of such issues, Dr. Nachman advised purchasing baby wipes in smaller quantities, as bacteria can grow more easily in warm, damp environments. For those looking for alternatives to traditional baby wipes, Dr. Nachman suggested using a soft washcloth and warm water, especially at home or near a sink. Other options include 100 percent organic cotton washcloths, baby body washes approved by the National Eczema Association, and dry wipes made from 100 percent cotton that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. These alternatives can help minimize the risk of skin irritation and bacterial contamination.
