Lorena Wiebes of Team SD Worx-Protime won the first stage of the Tour de Chongming Island in China on Friday. The 110.4-kilometer route took riders around the island of Chongming, and Wiebes, a Dutch cyclist, outpaced her rivals in a final sprint. She finished ahead of French rider Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek) and Irish rider Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ). This victory marks Wiebes' 21st win of the season and her 139th career victory, solidifying her position as one of the top cyclists in the peloton. Clara Copponi, who was expected to be a strong contender, came in second, just behind Wiebes. The Dutch cyclist maintained her dominance despite challenges from the Liv AlUla Jayco team in the final 30 kilometers, which tried to break away and avoid a group finish. However, the peloton remained under the control of SD Worx-Protime, and Wiebes' team effectively managed the attacks, setting up a strong final sprint. On the final straight, Wiebes used her power and experience to win by nearly two bicycle lengths over Copponi. Though Copponi was well positioned in the wheel of her rival, she was unable to overtake her. Lara Gillespie took third place, ahead of Canadian cyclist Maggie Coles-Lyster (Human Powered Health), who finished fourth. The results of the first stage of the Tour de Chongming Island were as follows: 1. Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) with a time of 02:47:34; 2. Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek) + 00:30; 3. Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) + 00:25; 4. Maggie Coles-Lyster (Human Powered Health) + 00:20; 6. Noa Jansen (Liv AlUla Jayco) + 00:10; and 10. Kathrin Schweinberger (Human Powered Health) + 00:01. These results set the provisional general classification after the first stage of the race.
