In a thrilling college football showdown on Saturday night, No. 4 Texas staged one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent memory, defeating top-ranked Ohio State 24-23. The Longhorns overcame a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Hollywood Smothers with just 25 seconds left on the clock. Ohio State had seemed poised for a dominant victory, leading 23-3 after the first three quarters, but Texas fought back with determination and precision. The turning point came early in the fourth quarter when Texas quarterback Arch Manning connected with wide receiver Ryan Wingo for a touchdown. That score ignited a furious rally, and Smothers added another touchdown with 7:14 remaining. Ohio State had a chance to extend its lead with a potential game-winning field goal, but kicker Connor Hawkins missed from 45 yards, giving Texas the opportunity to seal the win. Though quarterback Julian Sayin passed for 278 yards and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, Ohio State’s offense struggled after halftime, producing only a single field goal. For Ohio State, the loss was particularly bitter as Smith, their star wide receiver and All-American, had been held in check in the second half. Despite his strong performance earlier in the game, key passes intended for him were either incomplete or intercepted as Texas tightened its defense. For Texas, the victory was a redemption story after a rough first half marked by dropped passes, missed throws, and turnovers. Wingo’s clutch touchdown catch in the fourth quarter balanced out an earlier drop that had frustrated the team. The win is considered one of the most significant regular-season victories for Texas in six years and is a major boost for coach Steve Sarkisian and quarterback Arch Manning, who had faced pressure to live up to Heisman Trophy expectations. The performance could also elevate Texas to the No. 1 ranking. Looking ahead, Ohio State will host Kent State on Sept. 19, while Texas will face UTSA at home the same day.
