Paris expands bike infrastructure

The mayor of Paris has announced plans to create 140 kilometers of new bike lanes, adding to the city’s existing network, and has allocated 200 million euros to fund the expansion. This follows initiatives started by the previous administration, which also prioritized cycling as a key mode of urban transport.

Focus on cyclist safety

The new bike lanes are intended to improve the safety of cyclists by providing dedicated space on city roads, reducing conflicts with motor vehicles. The mayor emphasized that the project aims to make cycling more accessible and secure for all residents.

Rebalancing the east-west axis delayed

Despite the progress on bike infrastructure, the rebalancing of the city’s east-west axis—often cited as a key urban planning challenge—may still be delayed. This refers to efforts to distribute population and economic activity more evenly across the city’s districts.

Funding and implementation

The 200 million euros allocated for the project will cover the construction and maintenance of the new bike lanes over several years. Officials have not yet specified a timeline for completion, but the funding is expected to support phased implementation across different neighborhoods.
