OpenAI, the company behind the widely used AI chatbot ChatGPT, has introduced advertisements to its platform, signaling a major change in how the service is funded. While the basic version of ChatGPT will remain free to use, users can no longer expect a completely ad-free experience. This shift was expected after initial tests began in the United States earlier this year. Now, users in France are being notified of the change via email from OpenAI, marking the next phase of the rollout. Users who do not have a paid subscription—such as the Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, or Education plans—will see advertisements while using ChatGPT. However, these users still have some control over the type of ads they see. Through their account settings, they can choose between personalized ads, which are tailored to their preferences and behavior, or generic ads that are less specific. To disable personalized ads, users can log into the ChatGPT website, go to their profile settings, select "Data Management," and then adjust the "Ad Management" settings by unchecking the "Personalize Ads" option. It is important to note that personalized ads are not currently available in France. A message under the relevant setting explains that "Personalized ads are currently not available in your region. You will still see ads based on limited data, such as your general location, context, and device type." This indicates that the way ads are implemented may differ depending on the user's location. The introduction of ads represents a strategic move for OpenAI to generate revenue while maintaining the free access to ChatGPT. The company has not disclosed specific details about how much revenue this change might bring, but it reflects a broader trend among tech companies to incorporate advertising into AI platforms. As the rollout continues, users in other regions may also begin to see changes in how ads are presented, depending on local regulations and market conditions.
