The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is getting ready for its 34th edition, with the full list of selected Forum projects now announced. The Forum, a key part of the festival, will run from 15 to 18 November during the larger event, which takes place from 12 to 22 November. This year's Forum includes 47 documentary projects chosen from nearly 860 submissions across various categories, including Forum Pitches, Roundtable Presentations, Rough Cut Presentations, and the IDFA DocLab Forum, which focuses on new media. The festival is adjusting its presentation formats to help projects better communicate their needs and foster more meaningful connections with collaborators.
Adriek van Nieuwenhuijzen, head of IDFA Industry, stated that despite the challenges in the film market—particularly in securing finance and distribution—the IDFA Forum remains committed to supporting filmmakers who approach their work with courage and curiosity. The lineup features a mix of well-known documentary filmmakers and emerging talents from across Europe and beyond. Among the projects are Jiabiangou by Wang Bing, Odesa.Mama by Vitaly Mansky, and Recovery by Roman Bondarchuk, as well as new voices from countries like Greece, Hungary, and Georgia.
The IDFA Forum also emphasizes gender balance in its selection and provides a platform for up-and-coming documentarians worldwide. This year's projects span a wide range of topics and styles, reflecting the diversity of documentary filmmaking. The Forum Pitch and Roundtable Presentations include films such as Super Sila from Palestine, Dr. Hedgehog from Denmark, and Shooting Stars from Iran, among others. These projects are designed to engage with audiences either in larger group settings or in more intimate, detailed discussions.
The Rough Cut Presentations highlight works that are still in development, such as Artificial Clouds from Chile and Oh Heart, Don’t Be Afraid from Georgia. The IDFA DocLab Forum, which focuses on new media, includes projects like TKHAFSH / تخفش from Lebanon and Lidscape XR from Colombia. These presentations offer a glimpse into the future of documentary storytelling through innovative formats and technologies. The full list of projects showcases the global reach and creative diversity of documentary filmmaking today.
