A man was seen driving a suspected stolen Tesla through a crowded area of San Diego’s Pacific Beach boardwalk on Monday, striking a woman before being chased down by bystanders. The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of Thomas and Reed avenues, where the woman was hit by the electric vehicle and suffered critical injuries, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. She was transported to a hospital for treatment. The chase began earlier that afternoon when police responded to a report of a stolen Tesla being tracked by its owner. Around 12:20 p.m., officers located the vehicle driving south on Mission Boulevard. When they attempted to stop the driver, he refused and fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, the Tesla struck an electric transformer owned by San Diego Gas and Electric and continued toward the boardwalk, according to the San Diego Police Department. Due to the risk to public safety, a field supervisor called off the pursuit. The Tesla then drove onto the Pacific Beach boardwalk, speeding northbound through a crowded area. Witnesses described hearing loud noises and seeing the vehicle strike the woman before speeding away. Another woman on the boardwalk jumped out of the way just in time, as shown in surveillance footage. Emergency responders evaluated her and confirmed she was unharmed. “A lot of people dove out of the way very quickly, and it really could have been so much worse,” said Candace Hadley, a spokesperson for the fire department. “This is a very busy boardwalk. Having someone drive through this area is incredibly frightening,” she added. The driver eventually stopped near the Baja Beach Cafe, where a bystander named Alex Srour chased him on foot. Srour used Meta sunglasses with a built-in camera to record the chase, showing the man being tackled by pedestrians and detained until police arrived. The driver was suspected of being under the influence, and authorities are investigating the incident as a felony hit-and-run. The area around Thomas Avenue and Mission Boulevard was closed for several hours, but the boardwalk reopened by 4 p.m.
