Gaston Lagaffe returns with a new album, 'Des boum et des paf,' continuing the legacy of the beloved comic character in its 23rd installment.
New album released
Gaston Lagaffe has returned with a new album titled Des boum et des paf, published by Dupuis on Wednesday, October 21, in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada. The album is printed in one million copies, highlighting the enduring popularity of the comic character known as "the king of blunders."Continuing the series
This marks the 23rd album in the series and the second not signed by its original creator, Albert Uderzo, who died in 1997. The new album is written and drawn by Marc Delafontaine, also known as Delaf, who had previously worked on the series Les Nombrils.Collaboration and inspiration
Delaf stated that he grew up with Gaston and aimed to be faithful to the spirit of the original creator. He collaborated with French illustrator Lewis Trondheim, who contributed around 75 gags to the album.Character description
Gaston Lagaffe is depicted as a laid-back anti-hero in the 1960s and early 1970s, working in the editorial department of Dupuis editions. The character is described as imaginative and energetic, though often absent-minded in his work.Popularity and themes
Delaf noted that Gaston's popularity stems from his creativity, defense of human values, and his friendship despite his foolishness. He also mentioned that young readers are not disturbed by the outdated nature of the series, which does not feature modern technology such as mobile phones.Global reach and challenges
The series has been translated into 27 languages and the first 22 volumes have sold over 34 million copies. The revival of the series faced challenges as Isabelle Franquin, the daughter of the original creator, initially opposed the publication of a new album.Future plans
However, she eventually yielded after an arbitration, respecting her father's wish not to see Gaston continue under another illustrator's hand. Delaf expressed happiness at continuing the legacy of Franquin and is currently working on a 24th volume. He mentioned that he would consider doing three albums but would stop if he loses inspiration.
