Deputy Bamana pushes for water solutions

Deputy Anchya Bamana continues her efforts to address the water crisis in Mayotte, despite a recent setback in the National Assembly where her proposed water law did not pass. She is now focusing on holding the government accountable, especially President Emmanuel Macron, and has criticized the lack of response from his foreign affairs and interior ministers.

Senator Oili raises regulatory concerns

Senator Saïd Omar Oili is raising concerns about the procedures used to shorten regulations for the second seawater desalination plant in Hironi Bé and the Bouyouni airport project. He plans to address Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu directly to investigate the fate of fishing fees collected from Seychelles' senior tuna boats, which have not been redirected to support the local fishing industry in Mayotte.

Accelerated processes face scrutiny

Oili has criticized the Lecornu government for using civil emergency procedures to expedite regulatory processes for these projects. He noted that this approach has not significantly accelerated progress on the Hironi Bé plant and raises questions about the consultation process for the Bouyouni airport. He has also requested information from the President of the Administrative Courts of Reunion and Mayotte regarding the lack of a public report on financial compensation for affected farmers.

Fishing fees remain unaccounted for

Oili highlighted the lack of transparency in the use of funds collected from the fishing fees, stating that he has not received a response to his inquiries despite sending a letter to the government two years ago. During a recent meeting with the minister of the Sea and Fishing, he was told that 700,000 euros had been spent in 2025, but no details of the funded projects were provided. Oili intends to seek clarification directly from Prime Minister Lecornu.

Tensions rise between Mayotte and France

The situation between Mayotte and the French government has become increasingly tense, with Mahorais parliamentarians, except for Thani Mohamed Soilihi, opposing the government's handling of the region's issues since the December 14, 2024, disaster. Soilihi, a former ally of Macron, has criticized the government's response and refused to support the so-called "Refoundation of Mayotte post-Chido" initiative, which he views as a delaying tactic.

Bamana faces political pushback

Bamana has faced criticism from left-wing and center-right blocs in the National Assembly, who have shown little regard for Mayotte's struggles with water shortages and poor management by the Mahoraise des Eaux (SMAE). She has responded by addressing Macron directly, criticizing the dismissive attitude of some officials and the potential impact of the government's policies on Mayotte's residents.
