Tottenham Hotspur, a well-known soccer club competing in England’s Premier League, has significantly reduced its technology costs by switching from VMware to Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) virtualization software. The club has reportedly saved over 85% in licensing fees by replacing its existing VMware setup with HPE’s Morpheus VM Essentials (VME) software. While Tottenham hasn’t disclosed the exact VMware products it used or the previous costs, the change is part of a broader effort to modernize the club’s digital infrastructure. The transition involves moving the stadium’s server, storage, and networking systems to HPE solutions, delivered through HPE’s GreenLake hybrid cloud management platform. According to Rob Pickering, Tottenham’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the change is supported by HPE’s VME and OpsRamp software, which are designed to manage complex, multi-site environments and streamline operations across hybrid and multi-cloud setups. HPE is handling the management of the new hybrid cloud service, allowing Tottenham to focus on its core operations. Tottenham is nearly finished with a major redesign of its stadium’s data center and network infrastructure. The data center, which includes six aisles of hardware, now uses HPE’s ProLiant Compute Gen12 servers and Alletra Storage MP. HPE highlighted in a recent announcement that Tottenham is using these solutions to manage a complex, multi-site environment more efficiently while updating its virtualization platforms and reducing the workload on its IT team. Pickering noted that the club is at a natural point in its technology cycle to consider changes. He explained that hypervisor software, which allows multiple operating systems to run on a single machine, has traditionally been seen as a "boring" part of IT infrastructure. However, he criticized VMware, a dominant player in this field, for making decisions that he believes don’t always align with the needs of both service providers and customers. This shift to HPE reflects Tottenham’s strategy to adopt more flexible and cost-effective technology solutions.
