Apple has released updates for several versions of its macOS operating system, including macOS Tahoe 26.7.1, macOS Sequoia 15.8.1, and macOS 27.0.1, on September 28. These updates were released alongside iOS 27.0.1 for iPhones and iPads. The macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 update addresses a critical security vulnerability in the CoreGraphics component, which could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code if a specially crafted file is processed. This vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-86950, was reported by Meta Product Security. Apple has acknowledged a report suggesting the vulnerability may have been used in an "extremely sophisticated" attack targeting users with iOS versions older than iOS 27, but the company has not confirmed any active exploitation. It also clarified that the vulnerability is not connected to AI tools that might be used to speed up malicious attacks. The update resolves the issue by improving memory boundary checks. In addition to the macOS updates, Apple released iOS 27.0.1, which includes fixes for specific issues on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. These updates address unexpected restarts after Face ID authentication failures, as well as problems with colored artifacts appearing in photos and touchscreen freezes when opening the Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously. Unlike the macOS update, these iOS fixes do not involve any security-related CVEs. The macOS updates are available through the System Settings app, under the General section, then Software Update. Apple strongly advises users to install the update promptly, as the vulnerability could be exploited through a malicious file. The vulnerability has been assigned a severity score of 8.8 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), indicating a high level of risk. Apple has not disclosed further details about the vulnerability until the fix is available, following its standard policy of providing information only after a patch is released.
