Bose has unveiled two new open-earbud models: the Ultra 2nd generation and the Sport Open earbuds. Both feature a clip-on design that secures them in place without pressing into the ear canal or blocking it. These earbuds use Bose OpenAudio technology, which uses a special transducer and acoustic structure to deliver clear sound directly to the ear while reducing sound leakage to the outside. The digital signal processing, known as Bose SoundDesign, helps balance the clarity of high frequencies and the richness of bass tones. Unlike many competitors, Bose has opted not to include active noise cancellation, as it believes it's important for users to stay aware of their surroundings. However, integrating noise cancellation into open designs like these remains technically challenging. To enhance voice clarity, Bose has incorporated SpeechClarity technology, which uses dedicated microphones and voice capture units in each earbud to isolate speech from background noise, preserving its natural sound.
The Sport Open earbuds are tailored for physical activity. They include dynamic speakers designed for a full, balanced sound and an Auto Volume function that adjusts sound levels based on ambient noise. The earbuds are certified with IP54, making them resistant to sweat, dust, and splashes. Their charging case supports wireless charging and features a translucent, textured cover. Bose claims up to 7 hours of playback on a single charge, with an additional 22 hours from the case. Each earbud weighs 10 grams, and the case weighs 50 grams. The Sport Open earbuds are available in Black, Cloud White, and a limited edition Eucalyptus Green.
The Ultra 2nd generation earbuds maintain the original design but include a new speaker that offers deeper bass and higher volume compared to the first generation. They also feature the Auto Volume function, which adjusts sound levels when moving from a noisy environment to a quiet one. A key new addition is Cinema mode, powered by Bose's TrueSpatial technology, which enhances the perceived sound space for videos and podcasts while keeping dialogue clear and centered. The earbuds now have a redesigned metal cap with a beveled finish, and their case now supports vertical standing and wireless charging. They support Snapdragon Sound with aptX Adaptive for reduced latency and better connectivity with Android devices. Bose claims up to 9 hours of playback per charge, with an additional 19.5 hours from the case. Available in Black and Cloud White, they also come in three limited editions: Cherry Chocolate, Olive Green, and Sky Rose.
Both models share similar connectivity features, including Bluetooth Core 5.4, support for multipoint (connecting to two devices at once), and codecs like SBC and AAC. Google Fast Pair makes pairing with Android devices quick and easy. The Bose app lets users personalize their listening experience with a three-band equalizer, adjust the Auto Volume function, and set up shortcuts, while also managing Bluetooth devices and firmware updates. A planned firmware update after the October 1st launch will add features like location tracking via Google Find My Device, integration with Alexa+ for voice-activated tasks, and shortcuts for Apple Music.
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds 2nd generation will be available starting October 1st, 2026, at a price of 299.95 euros. The Bose Sport Open earbuds will follow on October 15th, 2026, at a price of 199.95 euros.
