Tom Cruise played the character Jack Reacher in two films, Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, released in 2012 and 2016, respectively. The character is based on the novels written by British author Lee Child. In 2005, Child signed a contract that included a clause allowing him to veto the production of any further films beyond the second one. This decision was made after the first film, Jack Reacher, was released in December 2012 and enjoyed a long development phase. The film's success significantly boosted sales of Child's books, with eight of his previous paperbacks reaching the Top 10 in January 2013. Despite this success, Child decided not to support a third film. He expressed concerns that the films did not accurately reflect the books, leading to dissatisfaction among fans. Child emphasized that the books are the core of his work, while the films are secondary adaptations. He noted that some readers felt "deeply betrayed" by the films' portrayal of Jack Reacher, which they believed lacked the depth and fidelity of the original stories. However, Child has approved an Amazon series centered on Jack Reacher, which is more faithful to the books. The series, starring Alan Ritchson in the title role, has already seen the announcement of its sixth season. Child believes that a television series is the ideal format for telling Jack Reacher's stories, as it allows for more in-depth exploration of the character and plot without the time constraints of a feature film. This format, he argues, better suits the complexity and depth of the Jack Reacher narrative.
