Lee Child steps down from Reacher series

Lee Child, the British author of the Jack Reacher series, has confirmed he will no longer write new adventures for the character, passing the responsibility to his younger brother, Andrew Child. The transition began in 2020 with The Sentinel, the first novel co-written by both authors, and continued through subsequent publications, with Chain Reaction, the 31st novel in the series, marking the final work by Lee Child. The novel was published on October 20.

Lee Child discusses the transition

Lee Child explained to Collider that the decision was not a painful one, stating that the purpose of writing is to reveal the essence of the character and allow readers to appropriate it and let it come to life in their minds. He compared handing over the character to the various screen adaptations of Jack Reacher, including the films starring Tom Cruise and the Prime Video series featuring Alan Ritchson.

Lee Child on fan engagement

Lee Child also encouraged fans to take possession of the Reacher universe, noting that there are many fanfictions around the character, which he considers positive. He mentioned that he only discovers his brother's manuscripts when they are sent to the publisher, as Andrew is very secretive about his work. Lee Child described their writing method as based on improvisation, with no long-term vision or fixed plan.

Continued involvement with adaptations

Despite stepping down from writing, Lee Child remains involved with the television adaptations of the series and continues to exchange with his brother about the character's evolution. The Prime Video series, which has been carried by Alan Ritchson since 2022, has attracted 66 million viewers worldwide in 28 days with its fourth season. A fifth batch of episodes is currently being filmed, a sixth has already been ordered, and its first spin-off, Neagley, will get a second season.

Reacher series availability

The first four seasons of Reacher are available on Prime Video. The show's ongoing success and expansion into multiple seasons and spin-offs indicate continued interest in the Jack Reacher character and its universe.
