HP has unveiled the ZBook Ultra G3a 16, a high-performance workstation tailored for complex artificial intelligence (AI) tasks that can be handled locally, rather than relying on cloud computing. This laptop is aimed at professionals who need powerful hardware to run large AI models, such as those used in natural language processing or machine learning. It features up to 192GB of LPDDR5X memory, integrated Radeon graphics, and AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 processor. HP claims that the highest-memory configuration can run large language models with up to 300 billion parameters directly on the device, making it one of the most capable AI workstations in a portable form factor. The ZBook Ultra G3a 16 is equipped with a 16-core processor that can reach clock speeds of up to 5.2GHz, along with a 55 TOPS neural processing unit (NPU) to assist with AI computations. It can allocate up to 160GB of its 192GB memory to the Radeon 8065S graphics processor, leaving ample room for other system tasks. Storage is also robust, with a single PCIe Gen5 x4 slot supporting up to 8TB of storage, though HP also offers models with smaller capacities. In terms of power and cooling, the device can sustain up to 100W of power, nearly double the 55W of its previous model. It comes with a 96Wh battery that can last up to 14 hours on a single charge and supports fast charging, reaching 50% in just 30 minutes with its 180W adapter. A dual-fan cooling system with copper heat pipes and a shared heat spreader helps manage the heat generated by the high-performance components. While HP has not officially announced the price, estimates using its Local AI Value Calculator suggest that the most expensive model—featuring the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 processor, 192GB of memory, and 512GB of storage—could cost around $7,449. Lower-end configurations with 128GB or 64GB of memory are priced at $5,999 and $3,899, respectively. HP is also promoting the device by highlighting the cost savings of moving AI workloads from the cloud to local hardware, based on assumptions of daily usage and energy consumption. The ZBook Ultra G3a 16 is available with a range of display options, including a 16-inch FHD panel, as well as higher-resolution IPS, OLED, and DreamColor displays. Despite its powerful components, the laptop is relatively slim at 17.9mm and weighs just 4.2 pounds. Connectivity is extensive, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, USB-C, USB-A, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and optional 5G support. It also supports multiple operating systems, including Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Home, FreeDOS, and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, offering users flexibility in their software environments.
