New transborder routes in 2027

Air Canada and United Airlines plan to launch six new routes between Canada and the United States for the summer of 2027. These routes will be part of an expanded joint venture agreement, which requires regulatory approval before it can take effect. The new services aim to enhance connectivity and travel options across the border.

Air Canada's three new routes

Air Canada will introduce three new seasonal routes to the U.S. The first is a daily flight from Toronto to Louisville, starting April 28, 2027, and continuing through October. Montreal will also connect daily to Indianapolis from June to September, and Edmonton will have four weekly flights to Newark from June to October. These routes will provide direct access to U.S. destinations and connections to United’s network.

United Airlines' new services

United Airlines will add a seasonal route between Newark and St. John’s, a service not offered for over a decade. It will also expand its network by connecting Denver to Ottawa and Quebec. These additions are expected to improve connection options within United’s U.S. network, though specific dates, frequencies, and aircraft are not yet detailed.

Increased capacity on existing routes

Both airlines will enhance existing routes. United will increase the number of weekly flights between Washington-Dulles and Quebec to five. Between Denver and Winnipeg, daily seat capacity will rise by 65%. These improvements aim to better meet demand and improve service reliability.

Renewed joint venture agreement

Air Canada and United have agreed to renew and expand their cross-border joint venture, which was first established in 2022. The updated agreement is awaiting approval from Transport Canada. The partnership allows for coordinated schedules, fares, and itineraries that combine both carriers’ services, offering passengers more seamless travel options.

Partnership's impact on domestic travel

The partnership has created 20 cross-border routes since 2022, with six added in 2026. Together, the airlines now offer over 1,200 connecting itineraries. The collaboration also helps move about two million passengers annually between the U.S. and Canada, supporting domestic services in over 50 Canadian communities.

Network adjustments and route removals

The expansion comes with trade-offs. Air Canada will remove five routes, including Toronto to Boston and Vancouver to Nashville, citing commercial reasons and the need to align capacity with demand. This adjustment reflects a strategy to optimize the network based on travel trends and passenger needs.
