**Coffee and Aging: A Growing Body of Evidence** In the long list of healthy behaviors to adopt for aging well, should we include drinking coffee? Research on this beverage, one of the most consumed in France, is increasing, and their conclusions generally point in the same direction. Among recent studies, a first literature review published in November 2024 in Aging Research Reviews, conducted by researchers from the University of Coimbra in Portugal (and note, supported by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee), analyzed more than 50 epidemiological studies conducted on humans. Result: regular and moderate consumption of coffee appears to be associated with several health benefits, including a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. The review suggests that coffee's potential benefits may be due to its high content of antioxidants and other bioactive compounds, which may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. These processes are known to contribute to aging and the development of chronic diseases. However, the researchers emphasize that the studies reviewed were observational, meaning they show associations but not direct cause-and-effect relationships. Therefore, while the evidence is promising, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind these potential health benefits. The findings align with previous research that has highlighted the possible protective effects of coffee consumption on brain health and overall longevity. Some studies have even suggested that moderate coffee drinking could be linked to a longer lifespan. However, these benefits are typically observed in individuals who consume coffee regularly but in moderation—usually around three to four cups per day. Excessive coffee consumption, on the other hand, has been linked to negative effects such as increased heart rate, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. As the debate over coffee's role in health continues, the review underscores the need for balanced consumption and individual consideration of personal health factors. While coffee may offer some advantages for aging well, it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and good mental health practices.
