Offline computing alternative introduced

A new software named Offlined, created by Álvaro Cuadrado Chulvi and Eric Uguet, offers an alternative to cloud-based computing by enabling users to access knowledge, tools, and data directly on their computers without needing a constant internet connection. The software is available for Windows 10 and 11 and recently released version 2.0 in mid-October, followed by updates such as version 2.0.2 on October 18.

Local knowledge library

At the core of Offlined is a locally accessible knowledge library that includes resources such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikivoyage, Wikiquote, and WikiMed, available in multiple languages including French. These resources are stored in ZIM archives, a format similar to those used by Kiwix, which is a well-known offline knowledge access tool.

AI assistant and local server support

The software includes an AI assistant based on llama.cpp, which can answer questions using the downloaded resources and cite the relevant articles. Version 2.0.1 introduced the ability to connect to a locally installed AI server using tools like Ollama, LM Studio, or LocalAI, allowing the AI to operate on a more powerful machine within the home network.

Educational features and tools

Offlined also features Michael Encartha, an educational assistant inspired by the old Encarta encyclopedia, which can explain articles, generate quizzes, and test users' knowledge. The software includes geographical maps, a star map, and other educational tools, all of which can be prepared in advance for offline use.

Personal space and data recovery

Beyond knowledge access, Offlined functions as a personal space, offering features such as a calendar, contacts, note-taking tools, a multimedia library, and an encrypted vault for sensitive information. It also allows users to recover data from other services, including emails, contacts, and calendars in various formats. Version 2.0.1 introduced the ability for multiple users in a household to use distinct profiles, keeping their information and AI interactions separate.

Portability and storage requirements

The software can be launched from an external SSD or USB key without a traditional Windows installation, making it portable. However, users must consider the storage requirements, as the gpt-oss AI model can take about 12 GB, while a Wikipedia edition with images can range from 20 to 80 GB depending on the language. The world maps alone require about 120 GB of storage. Users are free to download only the resources they need.

System requirements and licensing

Offlined requires a minimum of 8 GB of RAM, though 16 GB is recommended for smoother use of the local AI. Performance depends on the processor and chosen model, and a dedicated graphics card is not necessary. The software is free for personal or educational use but is not fully open-source, as its code is available on GitHub but modifications and commercial uses require the developers' permission.

Security and testing considerations

The Windows program is not digitally signed, which may trigger a Microsoft SmartScreen alert. For initial testing, it is advisable to use a virtual machine or Windows Sandbox rather than disabling system protections immediately. While Offlined is a new project whose reliability and performance still need to be tested, its approach highlights an alternative to increasing dependence on cloud services. Users can explore Offlined through its official website or GitHub page.
