New AI tools added to ONLYOFFICE

ONLYOFFICE released version 10.0 of its office suite on October 10, introducing AI tools for text, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs. These tools offer features like summarizing documents, identifying spreadsheet trends, and generating presentation outlines.

Enhancements and security improvements

The update includes about fifty new features, over a thousand bug fixes, and the closure of 35 security vulnerabilities. These improvements aim to enhance both usability and security for users across various platforms.

AI access and customization

Users can access the AI tools through a dedicated tab in each editor, eliminating the need for external chatbots. The AI is optional in the free versions, allowing users to choose models, hosting, or opt out entirely. This flexibility caters to different user needs and preferences.

AI capabilities in specific applications

In spreadsheets, the AI can write and explain formulas, clean up inconsistent data, and build dynamic cross-tabulations. For presentations, it can transform raw ideas into structured plans with titles and speaker notes, helping professionals like lawyers quickly condense lengthy contracts.

Background AI operations

The AI assistants operate in the background, reacting to document modifications and offering functionalities such as softening the tone of a paragraph or extracting decisions from meeting transcriptions. These features are currently limited to the text editor, with plans for future expansion.

AI setup and privacy considerations

In the cloud, the AI service is based on OpenRouter and requires a credited wallet, while local servers can use any model, including local ones. This setup allows organizations with data sensitivity, such as law firms or hospitals, to use AI without transferring sensitive data outside their premises.

Community-driven AI integration

ONLYOFFICE made AI an optional module in its open source versions, including the Desktop Editors Community, in response to community feedback. On iOS and Android, the AI assistant integrates with Grok and DeepSeek, enabling form filling and voice input.

Additional features and tools

The text editor now allows real-time tracking of a colleague's cursor during co-editing, and the "Solid Paragraphs" option prevents orphaned titles. The PDF editor deletes hidden metadata, detects tables automatically, and memorizes signatures, enhancing document handling and security.

Updated architecture and new applications

The architecture of ONLYOFFICE Docs has been updated, introducing four free applications under the AGPL v3 license: AI Agents, Forms, Files, and Rooms. AI Agents serve as digital assistants with intelligent search capabilities, while Rooms provides secluded spaces for data sharing during audits or mergers.

New desktop application and compatibility

The desktop application, set to be downloadable for free starting October 13 for Windows, macOS, and Linux, includes a redesigned home page and integration with the Odoo ERP. ONLYOFFICE remains a free, open-source suite compatible with Microsoft Office formats, with over 21 million users.

Security focus with AI risks

The update addresses increased security risks associated with AI by closing vulnerabilities, acknowledging that AI can also be used by attackers to uncover weaknesses. This proactive approach ensures that users can benefit from AI tools while minimizing potential threats.
